I chose the Wright brothers first motorized flight. We began by looking at a variety of different national and world monuments and discussed the history each was honoring. We looked for similarities and differences in the group. I then introduced the class to the Wright brothers and we watched a video of this moment in history. We looked at the memorial in Kitty Hawk and discussed how it honored this historical achievement.
We then created a sculpture of an airplane using a toilet paper tube and some Popsicle sticks. Each student choose a metallic paint color and painted their sculpture in that hue. I decided to limit them to one color because most monuments are just one color or not painted at all.
We then create a diorama to place our sculpture in. I asked each student to choose whether they wanted to have an indoor our outdoor monument. We then added a informational plaque of the date of our historical event.
