So I had my fifth graders created pulled painting with a variety of liquid tempera. I encouraged them to keep complements away from each other so they could avoid getting a brown color. They loved it! I had them make two papers and pick the one they liked for their patriotic drawing.
We then talked about the artist Peter Max, what the word patriotic means and symbols that represent the U.S. or that were a symbol of patriotism. I then asked them to use a pencil to draw their chosen symbol on top of their pulled painting and then trace it with a black colored pencil, making sure to include some value. I got a lot of eagles and flags but in the end I think they liked the experience of the pulled paint.
