African Paper Mask with Paper Weaving Background

The learning objectives for this work were: We will know some of the characteristics of African masks.  We will understand that African masks are created for purposes such as ceremonies or events.  We will be able to create our own interpretation of a mask.

We began by looking at different African masks and finding the similarities.  We used neutral  and African Kente cloth colored paper to create our masks and added pattern with paper and dried beans.

We then created a background by weaving black and white paper together and then used cardboard scrap to add to the back of our masks before gluing them onto the weaving to create depth.

Paper Weaving Fish

With this lesson I wanted to introduce my younger grades to simple over one under one paper weaving.  We began by cutting a symmetrical shape from a folded piece of paper for the fish's body.  Scales were added with black crayon.

Then we folded the body in half in the opposite direction and cut slits about an inch apart to create the base of our weaving called the warp.  One inch colored paper strips were then woven into the body/warp using the plain weave of over one under one.  The ends of the strips were glued down and we used scrap paper to add an eye, top fin, bottom fins and a tail.

I really like this project and am so glad I found this lesson idea at: http://annaideankiertaa.blogspot.com/2014/08/kala-paperikudontatyo.html

5th Grade Circle Weavings

I usually do a circle weaving with 5th grade each year but we use a paper plate and then remove the weaving when we were finished.  The problem I've seen over the years in doing it this way is the weaving would curl up and also look like a small sock hat instead of staying flat.

Last year I stumbled across the way Mr. E (@http://www.artwithmre.com/) and I wanted to try it.  They turned out so great I did it again this year!  The students really liked designing their cardboard looms.  We began by breaking up a 9" circle into eight equall parts and filled each with a complex pattern.  I asked them to color in half of the pattern to have a nice contrast in colors.  Then we strung the warp string and began weaving.   It is a little tricky for some to get the weaving started, but once you get going with it, the weaving is a snap.  Thanks to Mr E for sharing his lessons!

Fifth Grade Circle Weaving

I try to do a loom weaving with third through fifth grade every year, and sometimes I fit a very small loom weaving in with second grade.  For a slightly new take on weaving with my fifth grade, I show them how to create a circle weaving on a paper plate, making sure to have an odd number of warp strings.

We tape the end of our weft string  to the center of our plate, under the warp strings.  I stress to them to make sure to weave along the edge of the plate where it is very clear what warp string comes next.  These first few steps can make some fifth grader's head spin and they struggle to work through them.  But as soon as they weave around the plate a couple of times they remember from their previous experience and they even think the circle is easier than the rectangle.

I remind them not to pull tightly as they go around or they could end up with a bowl shape or the ends of the weaving curl up.  When the plate is full, we flip it over and cut the warp strings and remove them from the cuts along the edge of the plate.  The warp strings are knotted gently to avoid curling.  They may then leave their warp string long or trim them.

Second Grade's Paper Weaving with Collage Squares

We began this lesson with a simple over-under weaving technique to meet our learning objective.  I then showed the class how to gently pull the right and left sides of their weaving out and up, over the end of all the paper strips to create a "frame" around the edge of the paper.  We glued the ends of all the strips to the back and let it dry.

Then we added three different sized squares to glue onto the top of our weaving.  I stressed to choose only two colors of each size square and create an alternating pattern to create a sense of unity.  I demonstrated how they could center the squares or turn them like a diamond or push them to one corner, so they had some variety and choice.

I was lucky enough to briefly work with a wonderful art teacher, Nancy Gorla from the Hazelwood School District, who shared this lesson idea with me.  Thanks, Nancy for all your wonderful ideas.

Second Grade's Warm & Cool Colored Paper Weavings

Since Earth day is coming up I wanted to come up with just a few ways to reuse items we would normally just throw away to create art.  I have just moved and had a ton of bubble wrap left over so we used it to create our papers.

During the first class I quickly reviewed warm and cool colors.  I asked the class to choose two warm colors and use tempera cakes to paint a design of their choice using only those two colors.  I then asked them to two cool colors on a second piece of paper creating a different design.

I asked the class to use the third color they did not use in their design to stamp the bubble wrap.  We used liquid tempera and a paint brush to brush it on them press it onto the top of our painting.

The second class we spent creating our paper weaving.  I think they enjoyed the experience of stamping the bubble wrap and the weavings turned out bright and beautiful.

Fifth Grade African Paper Weaving

Fifth grade is studying African Art and we are looking for geometric patterns in the work.  I focused on the textiles of Africa and had a power point to show them the different types and the geometric patterns on each.

We started with a 12x12" black construction paper for the warp and used 1", 1/2" & 1/4" wide strips to weave into the warp for the weft.  We began with the largest strips then over-wove the medium and skinniest strips on top.  The end of each strip was glued.

I then showed them how to weave vertically just the medium and skinny strips and glue the ends of those strips.  They could use random colors or limit their color palettes.  This is a lesson that is always successful and the kids seem to really like the finished work.
