Likes & Dislikes Self Portrait Second Grade

​We had a number of learning objectives for this work.  We will explore personal interests while creating a self-expression of our likes & dislikes, we will explore how artists can tell a story through their artwork and finally, we will begin to understand the difference between abstract & realistic portraits.

We began by listing five things we like and five things we don't like.  We then discussed what is a silhouette and profile; and then used a tag board pattern to cut one out and glue onto our paper.  Finally each child added their likes and dislikes to their work making sure to clearly show which they liked and which they didn't like.

Portrait from Observation Fifth Grade

​Fifth grade is working on the learning objectives: I can identify and create contour lines & I can create a portrait from observation.  Each student began this self portrait piece by taking a photo of themselves and importing it into the Brushes app.  They then created an additional layer to trace their photo.  This was very difficult because the shadows and highlights make it hard to see the contour lines of their face.  They drew on their background knowledge of portrait proportions they were introduced to in the fourth grade.  I reviewed how we drew our self portraits from fourth grade as well.  The noses were the most difficult but I think these pieces turned out wonderful!  They make me smile.

Realistic Self Portraits Second Grade

​Our learning objective for this piece is, We will create a realistic self-portrait using correct facial proportions.  We began by talking about what are correct facial proportions and looked at variety of artworks to decide if the artist used correct facial proportions in their portraits.  Next we looked at artwork and discussed what realistic means.  We then looked at each facial feature and discussed how to draw them realistically.

The class worked step by step to face map their self-portraits and worked hard to make their facial features look realistic.  We then focused on completing our self-portraits by adding a neck & shoulders, hair and any other item that would make it look like us.  
We outlined our drawings with markers and colored in our work with crayon.  

This was a very difficult task to take on but all my second graders were real troopers and took on the assignment without complaint or getting frustrated.  Way to go!

Self Portrait with Object or Favorite Animal

The learning objectives we've been working on for this assignment are:We will describe what an image represents, we will know different types of drawing media and we can identify safe and non-toxic art materials, tools and equipment.

We began by looking at Pablo Picasso's "Child with a Dove" painting and we described what we saw and what we thought was going on in the image.  

I then introduced three geometric shapes; circle, rectangle and triangle and demonstrated how they could use these shapes to draw a person.  Each student then used two of these shapes to draw a picture of themselves and then added an object or their favorite animal similar to Picasso's painting.

We outlined with marker and used multicultural crayons to color in the face and hands.  Each student then choose which non-toxic drawing media they wanted to use to color in their drawing.  They could choose from crayons, markers or colored pencils.

Super Hero Self Portraits

In this self portrait drawing I introduced correct facial proportion.  I demonstrated how to find the middle of the face by folding the oval (face) in half to place the eyes.  Then the chin was folded up to meet the eye line to place the nose in the correct place on the face.  And finally the chin was folded up to the nose line to place the mouth in the correct place.  Ears, hair, neck and shoulders were added last.

A superhero mask and logo for their shirt was added before outlining in black marker.  Crayons were used to color in their superhero self portraits.  Finally the colored drawings were cut out and glued onto a page of newspaper to look like they were part of a news story.

First Grade Self Portraits

I wanted to introduce correct facial proportion to m first graders here at the end of the school year to see if they could pull it off.  They really did a great job.  I pushed them to fold their traced oval in half to find the middle for the eye placement.  The chin was folded up to the eye line to find the place for the nose and finally the chin was folded up to the nose to find the place for the mouth.   After the self portrait was finished an ABAB pattern was added to the background.  The drawings were outlined in black marker and colored with crayons.

Fifth Grade iPad Silhouette with Variety of Lines

Fifth grade created their first work in the Brushes app this week.  I took a profile photo of each student in front of a green screen and uploaded them to their student folder in Dropbox.  Each student then downloaded their photo onto their iPad and then imported their photo into the Brushes app.  

Another layer was added over the photo layer and then each student traced their photo and colored it solid to create their personal silhouette.  Then they erased the top portion of their head.

A third layer was added for the lines.  I encouraged them to try all the different textures and effects that Brushes has to offer.  I also wanted colors from the color wheel in correct order.  

Finally each student saved their work, copied it to photos and uploaded it to their Dropbox folder.  I made some changes from the original, but I found the this lesson idea at http://pinterest.com/source/elementaryartfun.blogspot.com/.

Self Portraits on iPad by Fifth Grade

They drew from their background knowledge of portrait proportions they were introduced to in the fourth grade.  I reviewed how we drew our self portraits from fourth grade as well.  The noses were the most difficult but I think these pieces turned out wonderful!  They make me smile.

First Grade's Modigliani Style Self Portrait

I love this first grade project.  They always have such character and the kids like that their is no pressure to make their drawings look real, since Modigliani painted abstract portraits.
We start by looking at a variety of Modigliani portraits and discuss what do most of them have in common.  Tilted heads, long necks and long noses.  I then walk them through drawing like Modigliani and remind them that we are creating an abstract portrait.  The way we make them look a little like ourselves is the hair and how we color them in.

We then trace our drawing with permanent marker and color in with crayon.  The final step is to use square tissue paper pieces and water to stain the background.  I stress to them to be generous with the water, then lay down the tissue paper pieces and add more water to the top.  When they dry, I shake the tissue paper off into the recycle bin.  My students love this project and many tell me they made another at home.
