Folded Paper Radial Relief Sculpture

I haven't taught this lesson in a few years but fourth grade  was working on identifying and creating a relief sculpture and it just fit.  In the past I wasn't always happy with the results but this year the kids did such a great job!

We started with a square piece of paper that we folded in half four time to get an X & T crease to follow.  2" squares were used to fold in two different types of folds to create their radial sculpture.  I had one student who came up with her own folds and it turned out beautiful!

I have included my instructional video below.

Second Grade iPad Radial Design

Second Grade created a radial design using the Brushes app on the iPad.  I created a three circle template for the students to import into Brushes as a photo.  I have included the template below.

They then added a second layer to use a black line to create their radial design.  They then added a third layer for the color.  We finally merge all the layers together to get a clean black outlined radial design.

This is Second grade's first experience using the Brushes app.  I think they did a terrific job!

3rd Grade Radial Crayon Watercolor Resist

This week my 3rd graders continued to work on the learning objective: I can identify and create radial symmetry.  We began a crayon watercolor resist by tracing three different sized circles in the center of a square paper.  Then we used lines and shapes in each circle and the outside of the large circle to create patterns in radial symmetry.  My students then traced their designs heavily with crayon and then used watercolor to paint each circle and the background in a different color.  They turned out great!  Thanks to my teaching partner Jayme Durrwachter for this lesson! You rock and thanks for always sharing ideas with me.
