Our learning objectives for this work were: We will know art can be created to capture a memory that has feelings. We will understand how artists capture memories in art by comparing images.  We will be able to create a family portrait using materials/media and tools with
control.
We looked at the portraits of the artist Modigliani and discussed the similarities throughout his work, tilted heads, long necks and long noses.  We then drew a family portrait in Modigliani's style.  We incorporated a different emotion in each family member.  We colored our drawing with crayons and created a watercolor wash in the background.

The learning objectives for this work were: We will know some of the characteristics of African masks.  We will understand that African masks are created for purposes such as ceremonies or events.  We will be able to create our own interpretation of a mask.

We began by looking at different African masks and finding the similarities.  We used neutral  and African Kente cloth colored paper to create our masks and added pattern with paper and dried beans.

We then created a background by weaving black and white paper together and then used cardboard scrap to add to the back of our masks before gluing them onto the weaving to create depth.

Our learning objective is to know that one purpose of an Artwork is to tell a story.

We began by reviewing the previous projects we had completed this quarter and their purpose to tell a story.  We discussed the different part of "Freight Train" that each of our pieces represented.  We discussed how we predicted what would happen next in our work based on the book "Tuesday".

Then we read the story "Papa Please get the Moon for Me" and looked at and discussed how to draw the beginning, middle and end of the story.  We then divided our paper up into three spaces and drew the beginning , middle and end of the story and then traced our lines with black marker.  I loved their drawing so much we kept them just black and white so everyone could see their beautiful details.
