I started with giving each student a tag-board pattern for the oval and hat to trace and cut out from tan and yellow paper. We glued them onto blue construction paper and used pencil to add details to the face, hat and shirt.
I then tied in the learning objective: I can use overlap to show space. We added landscape details in the background with pencil. My first graders then used construction paper crayons to color in the pencil details. The final step was to use black crayon to trace all pencil lines to make our scarecrows really stand out.
